Surfing in Samoa is amongst the most challenging in the South Pacific. Treacherous shallow reef breaks make this the complete thrill / risk experience for the most adventurous surfers.
Both Upolu and Savai'i have some excellent surfing in both winter and summer. Winter surfing is generally more reliable (May to Oct) with southern swells hitting the south coast of Upolu and Savai'i. A few of the best sites include Boulders and Nu'usafe'e Islet on the south coast of Upolu (access by boat), Satuiatua on southern Savai'i (accessible from beach) and the summer surf at Fagamalo on northern Savai'i. It is customary to pay a ST$5 per day surfing right to the local villages.
Sa'moana Resort on south western Upolu caters to surfers offering either deluxe bungalows or a shared bungalow for more budget minded surfers. The resort offers the most experienced surf buddies and safety equipment on board their boats. Several shoestring surfing hostels operate on southern Upolu with less reliable boats.
