Hiking in Samoa is good on both Upolu and Savaii Island and there are some great hikes also on the main island of Tutuila in American Samoa.
There are several excellent hikes around the outskirts of Upolu Town. One of the more popular is the hike from Vailima House to the grave of Robert Louis Stevensons Grave which offers splendid views of the Upolu coastline (2 hours). Hiking trails meander throughout the high mountains of the Parker Ranch (location of Cloud 9 Retreat) and offer a good chance for bird watching. One of the more strenuous hikes is to Lake Lanoto where the greenish crater lake makes for a peaceful outing not far from town.
Around Upolu there are good trails in O le Pupu-Pue National Park accessible from the south coast of the island (half day to overnight with organised guide). The Fagalua Bay coastal walk (half day) on east Upolu is another exceptional hike and passes several remote and otherwise inaccessible villages.
On Savaii, the most popular hikes are to Tafua Crater (1 hour) the Alofaaga Blowholes coastal walk (2-6 hours depending on how far you walk) and the assent of Mt. Silisili, the highest peak in Samoa (1-2 nights with organised guide). Many more local trails can be found in and around the local villages leading to waterfalls, lakes and along the coast.
Cycling around either Savaii or Upolu is excellent, with lots of fale accommodation around both coasts and lots of sights and villages to see on the way. The coastal roads on both islands are quite flat and free of traffic, especially on Savaii which has recently been tar-sealed to a high standard. Unfortunately there are no organized cycling tours nor bike hire so you would need to take your own. You will attract a lot of curiosity from the villagers as tourists cycling is a novelty.
