Samoa Eco-tourism is thriving and promotes most of the agendas of green tourism, notably community tourism and preservation of the natural environment. It's success depends almost entirely on how these are administered by the tour companies and experienced by the tourist.
Staying in a beach fale is the simplest form of Eco-tourism in Samoa. Beach fales are all locally owned and operated by local villagers and enable them to achieve a standard of living whilst retaining their daily subsistence lifestyle. Now, if that beach fale is dumping its septic waste into the sea, then this becomes negative tourism. Try to ensure the beach fale operators meet certain standards: using traditional materials in building its fales; promoting the use of local food; and encouraging tourists to experience the Samoan way of life and appreciation of the natural environment. The benefit here is that the tourist dollar goes straight to the local community and the Samoan people quickly recognise the significance of their environment as a tourist product.
Pacific Travel Guides supports:
Minimum impact tourism and active support in the protection of the environment
The use of local materials for accommodation buildings and resorts encouraging susceptibility not waste
Resorts employing staff from local villages, buying produce from local farmers and supporting social developments in the local area
